Summary: -The Ushiromiyas have once again gathered on Rokkenjima, and once again Battler is not among them -However, this time he's written letters to everyone! -...But there isn't one for Shannon
This memory looks insignificant on the surface, but for Sayo it was a major turning point - it finally became clear that Battler had forgotten about his "promise" to her, and that she'd been waiting for him and suffering all these years for no reason. It's the culmination of what she figuratively describes as a thousand years of hell.
Summary: -Under pouring rain, Battler approaches the Ushiromiya mansion, finding a box in front of the entrance -Beatrice appears on the balcony, cheerful and very drunk -She rambles in chess metaphors, announcing that she's close to making Battler surrender to the Illusion of the Witch, but he responds that he'll never give in -Beatrice tells Battler to take on her test - if he wins, he'll become the family head and she'll submit to him in every way (yes, definitely including that way) -The test, found in the box, is a choice between the lives of Battler himself, everyone else, or the life of the person he loves the most -However, since he doesn't have a loved one, the test won't work, so a different one is required -Suddenly somber and dignified, Beatrice asks Battler to remember his sin of six years ago -Battler goes on a long speech about his reasons for leaving the Ushiromiya family for six years, and his reasons for returning -That's not the answer Beatrice was looking for, though -Over in the meta world, meta Battler is also stumped - as Beatrice makes very clear, the two of them were not acquinted six years ago, so how could Battler have sinned against her? -Even though the sin supposedly isn't an issue between the two of them, Battler can tell that Beatrice is looking for some kind of apology from him -The sin is one of the reasons for the disaster that kills everyone on Rokkenjima -Battler can't recall anything -Beatrice speaks to herself - even though the result was not in her favour, this was a risk she took to her bet, and now her game is completed -The Beatrice of the game board retires, uninterested in whatever happens next, and leaves everything to meta Beatrice -Beatrice walks away from the balcony, and from Battler
This is another memory that isn't entirely obvious about how significant it is, but it is in fact the culmination of the entire game. Sayo/Beatrice set up her entire bet - serial murders, faked deaths, the illusion of the witch, everything - for the sake of the possibility that Battler might remember his promise. And, since he doesn't remember, she has in effect lost their game without actually reaching a loss condition. It sends her to such a depth of despair that she chooses to abandon everything, essentially dooming both herself and Battler to oblivion.
